A Story That Needs To Be Shared

Today is my Dad's birthday. He would've turned 61. Yesterday someone asked me "How are you doing with his birthday and Father's Day so close together?" I replied "I miss him and I'm sad, but I know we were as peaceful as we could be and we were in a good place." The look received back was one of confusion, so I went on to explain...

"We talked about life a lot during those last few months. He told me getting cancer was an eye opening experience for him. He said he was lucky enough to be relatively healthy for his entire life. When he got sick he had a small glimpse into what having a chronic illness was like. Some days are good and some are bad...and you live to fight another day. Ultimately, he didn't want to pass away, but he felt very lucky to have had 60 years on this earth. Many people-including his daughter-never had that chance."

At the time it made me angry and sad (and it still does) and I told him as much. Still, I understood what he was trying to tell me. He was saying he was sorry. It was one of the few times I ever connected with my dad. I wish it would have been earlier and under better circumstances, but you take what life gives you. I love you and I miss you, Pop.

The struggles we face throughout our lives are daunting for sure, but there are wonderful gifts within that struggle too. Please take a moment to look at your life. Appreciate the things you have and the feats you've accomplished. For no matter how great or small they seem to be, they are significant. They are the story of your life.

Peaceful Things,

Josh
